15 Must Do Family Activities in Salt Lake City, Utah

In my opinion, Salt Lake City is one of the most underrated family travel destinations. I found so many interesting things to do within various degrees of budget. Below I’ve gathered a list of the 15 must do family activities in Salt Lake City.

Park City

One of our favorite family activities was walking around Park City. Park City is located about 35 minutes from Downtown Salt Lake City but trust me, it’s worth it. Traditionally known as a winter escape among snowboarders and skiers, Park City has recently grown to be a year round travel destination. Stroll along Main Street where you’ll find restaurants, a plethora of shopping and art galleries. Join in on the abundance of outdoor activities to do year round or check out the Utah Olympic Park that was built for the 2002 Olympics hosted in Utah. Want to see some beautiful scenery? Take a scenic drive through the mountains and discover unbeatable views the higher you climb. For a great deal on winter car rentals check out Fox Rent A Car

Wheeler Historic Farm

This is one of those places that I seemed to enjoy as much as the kids did! Established in 1887 the farm is rich in history and fun activities for all ages. There’s over 75 acres of landscape to enjoy, parks and a playground. Experience a variety of animals, walking trails, ponds and creeks. What makes Wheeler Historic Farm the perfect place for families is the vast amount of things to discover! How about seeing a cow milking demonstration, being drawn by a tractor in a wagon for a ride around the farm or taking a farm house tour to see artifacts that date back to the 1890’s. Don’t forget to stop off at the Rosebud Country store for some snacks and toys!

Loveland Aquarium

The Loveland Aquarium is one of the most epic aquariums we’ve ever stepped foot in. Plan to spend the better half of a day here as there is much to explore. It is a maze of climates from around the world featuring different animals, plants and hands-on activities in each room. My favorite part of the aquarium is the Penguin Encounter. In this room there is a bench where you can sit and watch the penguins swim, huddle together and play for as long as you want. When you exit to the right of the tank you will walk down a ramp that leads to a room where you can view the penguins from below. Don’t forget to check out upcoming events for a more in-depth experience Loveland Events.

The Great Salt Lake

What would a trip to Salt Lake City be without a trip to the Great Salt Lake? Take a dip in the water, sail a boat or sit on the beach to admire the beauty. It is the largest salt water lake in the Western Hemisphere and covers an area of about 1,700 square miles. Be aware it is called the Great Salt Lake for a reason, the water is very salty (at it’s record height of 27%). This saltiness makes for the unique experience of floating with ease.  Hiking, biking and bird watching are among the list of favorite activities to do. I’ve heard the sunsets over the lake are some of the most alluring in the world. I wish I could vouch for this but unfortunately we were unable to experience a sunset over the lake while there. If you have, please post your pics below in the comments!

Thanksgiving Point is a nonprofit farm, garden and museum complex. There are two campuses, about five minutes apart, that make up Thanksgiving Point. The two museums are the Museum of Natural Curiosity and the Museum of Ancient Life, both with plenty of hands on activities and up close and personal experiences. The Farm Country area is a real working farm where you can meet and feed the animals (some of which include llamas, cows and horses), where you can learn how milk goes from cow to table and you can enjoy pony rides. You will also find Ashton Gardens that provides over 55 acres of lush themed gardens and a man-made waterfall. Feed the Koi fish or hop on a golf cart to cruise through the gardens while there. Lastly, you’ll find a golf course, a few places to grab a bite to eat and a variety of events held throughout the year. For a current calendar of events click here Thanksgiving Point Calendar

Antelope Island

A 42 square mile island full of history, wildlife and beautiful land to roam this island is something not to be missed! Drive out over the causeway from the city and have your breath taken away instantly by the views. Antelope Island is the perfect outdoor family destination in the area. Hiking, biking, horse riding and camping are just some of the activities to be enjoyed. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll see some of the wildlife on the island such as deer, sheep or antelope. My kid’s favorite part was being able to see bison up close. Take a boat or ATV out for a little exploring. Don’t forget to stop off and see one of the many heritage areas or museums. Gypsy tip: pack a lunch or eat before hand as there is nowhere to eat on the island.
